Understanding FENSA — and Why It Matters

FENSA — the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme — is a government-authorised scheme that allows window and door installers to self-certify that their work complies with building regulations. It was introduced in 2002 to simplify the process of replacing windows and doors in England and Wales.

Before FENSA, homeowners replacing windows or doors had to apply for building regulations approval from their local council — a time-consuming and sometimes costly process. FENSA-registered installers can certify their own work, meaning no separate application is needed.

When you use a FENSA-registered installer, you receive a FENSA certificate after the work is completed. This certificate is important: it proves the installation complies with building regulations, and you'll need it when you come to sell your home. Solicitors routinely ask for it during conveyancing.

If you use a non-registered installer, you'll need to apply for a building regulations completion certificate from your local authority — which costs money and takes time. More importantly, if the work doesn't comply, you may be required to put it right at your own expense.

N&C Home Improvements is FENSA registered. Every window and door installation we carry out is self-certified and you'll receive your FENSA certificate as a matter of course. It's one less thing to worry about — and one more reason to choose a registered installer.
