Bi-fold Doors: Everything You Need to Know

Bi-fold doors — also called folding sliding doors — consist of multiple panels that fold back on themselves and stack neatly to one or both sides of the opening. When fully open, they create a seamless connection between inside and outside, flooding the room with light and making the garden feel like an extension of your living space.

Aluminium is the most popular material for bi-fold doors, and for good reason. Its strength-to-weight ratio allows for slim sightlines — the thin frames that maximise the glass area — while remaining structurally rigid. Aluminium bi-folds are available in any RAL colour and are virtually maintenance-free.

Sizing is flexible. Bi-fold doors can span openings from around 1.8m up to 6m or more, with panel counts typically ranging from two to seven. The more panels, the wider the opening you can achieve. For most rear extensions and kitchen-diners, a three or four-panel configuration works well.

Glazing specification matters for thermal performance. Look for double or triple glazing with a low-emissivity (low-e) coating and argon gas fill. A good U-value for the overall door unit is 1.4 W/m²K or below. All our bi-fold doors meet or exceed current building regulations for thermal performance.

Installation typically takes one to two days for a standard opening. The structural opening must be correctly formed with an adequate lintel before the door frame is fitted. We handle the full process — from survey and structural assessment through to fitting and sign-off — so you don't need to coordinate multiple trades.
